Anita Njoroge: 2004
ANITA’S TERRIBLE LOSS

Lejiren Lengoyo works hard for Mike
He’s a Samburu lad that all of us like
Cleaning shit from a patient at the side of a bed
He comforts the suffering until they are dead

Then it’s back to Maralal to visit his wife
taking a break from the care giver’s life
There’s the cows and goats, large herds of sheep
back at the Manyatta for a much quieter sleep

Lejiren Lengoyo is a good man from Samburu
He has a big heart and does the best he can do too
Anita’s poor husband suffered long, then he died
As Lejiren Lengoyo sat and worked at his side

Nana, Anita’s daughter, she died soon after that
Said Lejiren Lengoyo as we had our wee chat
Anita’s very lonely but is watched over by Joe
I bring her meds and a smile when to Africa I go

Author’s Note: This poem tell of the events surrounding a Maralal Samburu “HIV AIDS PATIENT CAREGIVER” named Lejiren Lengoyo as told in his own words in broken English to me one evening in July summer of 2004. Anita has been a friend of my wife Lynne and me for the past 8 years. She is a very courageous lady who is long term survivor living with Aids. She lost her entire family to the raging pandemic. Please keep her in your prayers.
