Billy Willbond: Desmond Went to Show and Tell
ICROSS field worker, Danny Ngwiri, presents an African Comfort Doll to an orphaned child in East Africa
DESMOND WENT TO SHOW-AND-TELL

I am praying as I sit here
In front of my P.C.
And I ponder all the blessings
That the good Lord’s brought to me

Desmond went to show and tell
With a little Maasai doll
He told his friends about sick kids
Who had no toys at all

He told them of his Grandma Lynne
A nurse who cares for others
And how she gathers medicines
For sick kids, dads and mothers

The children they each shed a tear
And they were all amazed
To hear about these medicines
And how some lives were saved

Teacher, she was quite impressed
So many kids were sad
“Because we live in Canada”
Des said, “We should be glad”

“In Canada we are lucky
All us little girls and boys
‘Cause we aren’t sick and dying
And we have a lot of toys”

So thank you God for Desmond
A wee lad who understands
About the plight of others
In those far off distant lands

And thanks be to God for Sandra
Who knits each Maasai Doll
For the sick and dying children
Who have no toys at all

Author’s Note: This poem was written about my grandson Des. My wife Lynne and my oldest daughter Sandra are doll knitters. Des took one of the dolls to school (kindergarten) and his report of the results of the show-and-tell is part of this poem.
